Your Mood, Your Mojo, & Neuroscience 🧠
5 mindset management tips for love, biz & life
Consider for a moment how important mood is when you’re anticipating an evening of love…. 😍
When you’ve got a hot new love prospect, you’re ALL about mood and the management thereof, am I right?
You pay attention to creating just the right mood, an ambience that’s designed to evoke specific feelings of the relaxed, receptive and romantic variety.
And so you clean the place up, light a few candles, make sure there’s just the right music playing, some goat cheese and white wine chillin’ in the fridge…it’s on!
In fact, when you’re in true love mode in general — I’m talking from the female side of the fence, now — tell the truth, don’t you gravitate to the lacy little sumpin’ sumpin’ instead of the ratty old granny panties? 🙈 And even though no one else knows what you’ve got on under there, YOU know.
You move differently through the world.
You’ve got a spring in your step.
You exude confidence.
You’re FEELin’ yourself.
When you walk through the world feelin’ good about yourself, loving who you are, feeling powerful and sexy…guess what?
That’s VERY attractive. People are drawn to that without even knowing why.
Not just potential love partners, but ALL people…potential collaborators, colleagues, clients, and on and on.
You engage in more conversations, you smile more, you’re aware of others, you’re more expressed, you’re happy. Who doesn’t want to be around that?
Well guess what? Neuroscience tells us there’s a scientific reason for that, and it’s called MOOD CONTAGION.
Mood contagion is a real neurological phenomenon. It has to do with the fact that our brains and our bodies pick up on the mood and energy of those around us.
Interestingly, a growing body of research on the human brain tells us that the emotional impact of a leader’s mood and accompanying behaviors is a huge driver of performance. There’s a lot being written about the importance of the leader’s mood when it comes to the overwhelming impact on the bottom line.
According to Primal Leadership: The Hidden Driver of Great Performance by Daniel Goleman, Richard Boyatzis and Annie McKee:
“A cranky and ruthless boss creates a toxic organization filled with negative underachievers who ignore opportunities. An inspirational, inclusive leader spawns acolytes for whom any challenge is surmountable.”
I’ll bet if you stop and think about it for a minute, it won’t be hard to recall a time — jeez, maybe even today — when someone’s mood “got on you” and negatively impacted you.
And what about the opposite? When have you shared someone’s happy, upbeat orbit and found yourself thinking different thoughts, having new ideas, seeing new possibilities?
I have seen time and time again how this phenomenon impacts not just love lives and social lives, but also people’s ability to expand their influence in the world via their chosen work.
And when you’re an entrepreneur, YOU are the leader of your organization. Meaning it’s your mood that sets the tone for how the business goes.
So I ask you: What’s the prevailing mood in YOUR business?
Time for some truth telling.
Is “cranky and ruthless” a mode you slip into now and again when it comes to leading your business and your Self? 😬
And if you never go there, wow, you’re in a league of your own!
Here’s why this is such an important thing to look at: Your mood is not only important in terms of your own ability to see and act on opportunities, it also shapes the energy you’re putting out into the world.
And thus it affects what comes back to you.
Makes sense, right?
What works, then, is to have some go-to practices that you can rely on to vibe up your mood and your mojo as needed. (Or better yet, build them into your daily life! There’s a whole thing called #RadicalSelfReverence I’ll get into more in another post.)
What we’re talking about here is getting you in the mood for love…and most specifically, present to your love for your Self and your life’s work.
Here’s the trick: You’re creating new neural pathways. You’re setting up life to support you in thinking new thoughts, carving out new habitual ways of viewing yourself, your business, your prospects, your worth, you name it.
It’s about re-wiring that brain of yours. Being intentional about what you give your attention to. What you surround yourself with. It works — and the more of your senses you appeal to in the process, the better.
Here are 5 ideas to get you started:
1.Display specially chosen items that stir you up, feel good to look at, and even serve as reminders of who you really are.
It could be a copy of your manifesto. Or a piece of art that inspires you. Or a poem.
As an example, one of the perks of many of the 1:1 VIP days I do with clients is I write a love poem to their essence, their brand’s soul, and I’m often told by the recipients that their poem lives somewhere they’ll see it every day.
2. Create a mood board on Pinterest.
The images you collect could represent your vision for your brand. Or they could be inspiration for what you want to accomplish. Or how you want to feel. Regardless, this vibe-up collection of pics should be chosen for their ability to bring out all the good feels when you see them. (Go visit them regularly and add a few more pics each time to keep you actively engaged in that good energy.)
3. Make it smell good where you are.
Aroma is a powerful thing. Does your workspace smell wonderful? I burn incense, use aromatherapy, and even got myself a signature fragrance. When I put it on, I feel creative and clever and badass—and I’m creating a neural pathway associating that fragrance with feeling like my best self.
4. Read those glowing testimonials again.
When you’re feeling kind of meh and ordinary, marinate for a moment in language that reminds you who you are at your best. You have a praise page on your website, right? (If not, that would be a good thing to work on!) Spend a little time letting that positive feedback sink in when you’re feeling pulled in the “cranky and ruthless” direction!
5. Put together a brand playlist!
One of Moxie’s signature services is creating a soundtrack that evokes the vibe of your brand. Not only can you use your brand playlist to escort you to your happy place whenever needed — I definitely listen to the Moxie playlist before a podcast interview! — you can also embed your Spotify playlist on your website to treat your visitors to a whole experience. For a different flavor, try on the soothing Americana of Harper Health’s sound, or the tropical, upbeat feel-good of Agile Rainmakers. What kind of mood do you want your brand to evoke for you and others?
What do YOU do to create the kind of mood that has you doing your best work and living your best life?
