When YOUR Soul Calls...Will You Answer?

Tuning into what your inner being wants

The other day I ran across the 6-minute documentary “Jim Carrey: I Needed Color” — an intimate-feeling visit with the actor who’s been cultivating his emerging artist for several years. If you’ve not seen it, or not seen it lately, I invite you to check it out.

I love seeing his drive. His hunger. His intense joy.

Here’s this dude known for his rubber-faced comedy pouring his heart out onto the canvas. And then another painting…and another. At one point, he says, he had so many paintings around, he was practically eating off them.

I mean the guy has been blissfully, obsessively cranking on his art with the kind of zeal usually reserved for all-you-can-eat buffets with an open bar.

My candidate for best quote in this mini-doc:

What you do in life chooses you. You can choose not to do it. You can choose to do something safer. Your vocation chooses you.
— Jim Carrey

I love the notion of there being something that “chooses you” — and we can either accept that proposal or not.

Which leads me to this question:

What vocation has chosen you?

Oh and regarding this next question, let’s all take a deep breath and really tell the truth to ourselves:

Have you chosen it back?

Or did you back away from the invitation and say your dance card was full ⏱️(too busy), or there were too many people on the dance floor 👯(too much competition), or too few people on the dance floor 😟 (too vulnerable), or you didn’t wear the right shoes 👠 (not gonna look good)…?

If you have truly chosen that pulse-quickening thing as yours, and you’re gettin’ after it like a person consumed in all the best ways, well, good on ya. That is for real worth celebrating, and I applaud you and drink to your wisdom and good fortune.

If, on the other hand, you feel the stirrings of something tugging, something choosing you, and you haven’t quite acknowledged the invitation, let alone accepted it—that’s also most excellent news.

You know why?

Because you’re tuned in enough to notice.

You are hearing the dog whistle of possibility, lucky you! All that personal growth stuff you’ve done and the effort you’ve put into your existence, it’s paying off and you’re sensing some…thing…tugging at your sleeve. Well done, you’re listening at a deeper level than you used to.

Now what there is to do is listen more. Ask yourself different questions, things like:

What gives me joy?

What do I get totally absorbed in?

What makes my neurons zing?

Sometimes, of course, we find we’re a little rusty at listening for the soul to answer back. That’s okay, just keep calling…pretty soon your soul will know you’re no-kidding wanting to be in touch…and will pick up. And share some good stuff.

Engaging in the inquiry is not committing, it’s just an inquiry. It’s okay to explore and at least consider what would make your inner being super happy, right? Because ultimately you get to choose what to pursue, what to pass on, and what to go full-on, Jim-Carrey-style passionate with.

Showing up in the world as someone who shows up for themselvesthat’s a beautiful thing, and we could all stand to see way more of it.

If you were to consider this short-and-sweet documentary a message in a bottle just for you, what would it be saying? What’s your favorite bit?

I’d love to hear what you think about all this soul and passion stuff…and if you’re feeling particularly generous, how it plays out in your life.
