IF YOUR ENERGY WERE A DOG…

 

A field guide for recognizing energy levels in yourself and others

 

I have this theory that if we were to regard the different energy levels we all experience as dogs doing all the different things dogs do, we’d be in a lot better shape.

 

There’s a lot of talk about the unconditional love dogs provide their humans.

Sooo…when’s the last time you gave your own fear or doubt a reassuring pat on the head and a hug? We’re far more likely to stuff it down, make it wrong, or turn it into a character flaw that must be vanquished and overcome.

But have you noticed we humans are sometimes better at loving a dog unconditionally than we are at loving ourselves? We grant them a lot more space for their different moods and behaviors than we do ourselves.

 

AND SO I THOUGHT IT’D BE FUN—POSSIBLY EVEN USEFUL—TO CREATE A FIELD GUIDE WITH PICTURES. PICTURES OF DOGS.

Let’s back up a sec, however. What am I talking about when I reference these energy levels? I’m referencing the work of Ann Betz and Ursula Pottinga of BEabove Leadership. (I did my certification training in neurotransformational coaching via their organization.)

Turns out when you map neuroscience research onto what we now understand about consciousness, that makes for some surprisingly powerful results. And BEAbove’s trademarked model of 7 Levels of Effectiveness, a fundamental part of my work now, represents this simple fact:

 

Life is all about energy.

 

AND THAT ENERGY TENDS TO COME FROM ONE OF TWO PLACES: LOVE OR FEAR, POSSIBILITY OR DOUBT, HIGH OR LOW, AND SO ON. WHERE YOU ARE COMING FROM IN TERMS OF YOUR ENERGY — WHO YOU ARE BEING — PLAYS A MAJOR ROLE IN THE RESULTS YOU’RE GETTING.

 

Does this mean you don’t need to take action, you simply need to be vibin’ high? Nope. What it means is this:

 

When your dominant energy is at a high level, you are more naturally in what I call SOULFUL ACTION, or action that is in alignment with your deeper wisdom, knowing and purpose.

 

While we all have a baseline level we tend to operate from, it’s also possible that within a certain context your energy will be noticeably different. Let’s say you’re rockin’ it in the career department…but your love life is pretty meh.

Or you are longing for something more, some purpose, but you’re not sure what that is.

Or you’re so busy taking care of business and family and life administrivia, you can barely remember what it was like to listen for your own desires and needs and make sure those got the attention they (you!) deserve.

 

AS YOU LOOK THROUGH THE GUIDE BELOW, CONSIDER WHERE YOU TEND TO “COME FROM” IN LIFE — AND WHAT AREAS OF LIFE HAVE YOU A BIT BOGGED DOWN IN THE BELOW-THE-LINE ENERGIES OF HOPELESSNESS, FEAR OR FRUSTRATION.

NOTE: This model is also super useful in terms of getting clarity about where someone else is coming from energy-wise!

 

When I realized out of this work that Chris (now my husband) was a consistently above-the-line person, he became twice as attractive to me.

Haven’t we all crossed paths with a love interest who somehow tends to bring us down, even though on paper everything looks perfecto? That’s usually a matter of their energy, my friend.

 

👉 YOU WANT TO PAY ATTENTION TO ENERGY.

1. HOPELESSNESS

 

SHAME, DISPIRITEDNESS

 

The fundamental inability to see or work towards a positive future.

Some typical language of this level:

  • What’s the point?

  • Life is unfair. And too damn hard.

  • I don’t care.

2. FEAR

 

ANXIETY, CRAVING

 

The belief that one must protect against almost certain loss, attack or disappointment.

Some typical language of this level:

  • I need to watch out for myself or I’ll get hurt.

  • Sooner or later people will figure out I’m a fraud.

  • Don’t be demanding, settle for what you’ve got or it might get worse.

3. FRUSTRATION

 

ANGER, EGOTISM

 

The focus on fighting and jockeying for position against (not with) others; the feeling that the external world (both people and circumstances) must be resisted.

Some typical language of this level:

  • What’s your problem?

  • People can be such idiots.

  • When ____ happens, I’ll be happy. Until then, I gotta suck it up.

4. COURAGE

 

BRAVERY, RESOLUTION

 

The willingness to take a stand against previously held negative or disempowering beliefs and actions, trusting in the possibility of a positive future (often despite current evidence that a positive future is not likely or predictable).

Some typical language of this level:

  • This scares the bejeezus out of me, but I’m gonna give it a shot!

  • If something’s going to change, I’ve got to make a move, do something different.

  • If this doesn’t work, I’ll try something else.

5. ENGAGEMENT

 

MOTIVATION, TOLERANCE

 

The desire to bring value, to be a contributor; basic enjoyment of the enterprise; focus on assets and strengths rather than limitations and detriments.

Some typical language of this level:

  • How can I help?

  • I forgive you…and I forgive myself.

  • I’m responsible for my own happiness.

6. INNOVATION

The ability to set aside ego, personal agendas and perceived restrictions and explore possibilities from all angles; questing for, seeking, and focusing on the most effective solution to the problem or goal.

  • I know this is figure-out-able.

  • Who else might have a good solution? Where else can we look?

  • Thanks for pointing that out, I had no idea!

7. SYNCHRONICITY

 
LOVE, HARMONY

 

Working from a true understanding that what is within creates what is outside; focus on creating a positive experience for all; the ability to see the gift and possibility in anything. The realm of “magical coincidence.”

  • I’m happy with me. I love me some me.

  • I love you unconditionally.

  • This moment, this life…is perfect.
